There are three re-occurring issues with parents and children:
1. Parents become frustrated when their children don't do as they
are told and usually end upbecoming angry and raising their
voice.
2. Parents tend to use the same parenting techniques over and
over again, even when it's clear what they're doing is not
working in getting a child's behavior to change.
3. Children respond best to activities that get their attention.
They love computerized games, GameBoys, etc. Why?
a. They have structure and limits
b. They give instant feedback
c. You can move forward in these games when you
make the right choices
d. They offer excitement!
Children may not get these elements from their parents. When they're behaving, all is well; parents don't usually give them a lot of attention. Children get attentionwhen they are NOT doing what is expected. Think about it.
For an example, Brenda, age 7, gets up everyday and gets ready for school by herself. Her parents don't give it a thought. "She's supposed to do that on her own. Why should I make a big deal out of it?" "I've got too many things to do to stop and give
her attention for something she knows how to do." Common everyday responses such as these do not give the child positive messages of acknowledgement and/or appreciation.
Most parental reactions given to their children's positive, expected behaviors are low-energy and infrequent---not at all like a computer or video game. When she doesn't do her chore or she argues with them, they become upset with her. When this happens, they are giving her more attention for negative behaviors.
So I ask you, how many positives do you give your child each day? How often do you hand out praise for being a good kid? In the competition between the feedback you give and the feedback a game gives to your child, which one is the winner?
